Experience is generally awarded equally to the entire party – if you participated in a game session you will earn (normally) 500 exp for just “getting through” the game. Accomplishing major goals and tasks may reward you with more if you are more successful. There is no experience gained from completing encounters or killing random people or monsters – it is all based on accomplishing goals and heroic deeds.
Critical Failures and Successes play a large role in this game. They are used to drive story and character development even further. A critical success will always result in the player gaining a feat related to what they succeeded in. The DM assigns this feat, and it may come from any source he chooses – even homebrewed. A failure can have dire consequences – both in game and to the character.
